Out of all of the puzzle-solving in God of War, opening up the Nornir Chests, more commonly referred to as Runic Chests, is arguably the most difficult. These chests contain health and rage upgrades for your character but can’t be opened like other chests in the game. Instead, they require you to perform a series of tasks with your axe.
The three letters on the Runic Chests are the key to opening them and seeing what’s inside. While Kratos and Atreus explain what you need to do to open the chests when you first see one, it’s an easy part to miss in God of War. That’s why we’ve laid out everything you need to know in this guide.
Opening Runic Chests in God of War
When approaching a Runic Chest, you will see three Norse letters glowing in blue on the front of it. These letters represent three bells somewhere nearby with one letter on them.
In order to open the Runic Chest, you need to throw your axe at all three bells, destroying them.
However, most of the chests require you to do this in a certain amount of time. If time runs out and you still haven’t broken all three bells, then it will reset and you’ll have to break the bells again.
The best way to go about opening the chests is to find the locations of all three bells before you start throwing your axe at them. This way, you know exactly where to look when you do decide to start the process of opening the chest.
The locations of the bells are usually in hard-to-see places, so you’ll need to be extra vigilant when looking for them in God of War. They’ll never be too far away from the Runic Chest, though, so you won’t have to venture too far.
Once you open enough of the chests, Kratos will have upgraded health and rage in God of War. It’s something you will definitely want later on in the game, especially when taking on Valkyries.
So there you have it, an easy way to open Runic Chests and find their combinations in God of War. Good luck, Kratos, may you find your journey to be one filled with loot.
